The Green House Hillcrest HealthCare has entered into an agreement to build the first Green House® residences in Tennessee. The Green House is the name for a new kind of dwelling designed for the elderly – one that provides small homes that function like single-family residences. William Thomas, a Harvard-educated geriatrician, developed The Green House concept. He chose the name to evoke a sense of continued growth and enjoyment. Recent studies show that The Green House residences have higher levels of resident and family satisfaction; less unexplained weight loss among residents; less incontinence; and less prevalence of depression. The Green House residences are staffed by certified nurse aides (CNAs) who work in teams with nurses. Nurses, doctors, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals make “house calls” as needed. Hillcrest’s first Green House residence will house 10 people and will look like a private home. Each residence will have a private bedroom with a full bath; halls will be wide but short; and doorways will be widened. Each Green House will have a central hearth with an adjacent open kitchen and dining area. Residents will enjoy family style meals around a common dining table with their family members, friends and staff. For more information or to make a donation, call the Hillcrest-Beverly Foundation at (865) 246-4013.
